PALM SAYS WEAK SALES + PALM “PRE” STILL ON TRACK

the pre!!!

the pre!!!

via Yahoo News

Palm reveals that revenue is down—way down—as customers stop buying older Palm smartphones in anticipation of the red-hot Pre. Meanwhile, the struggling phone maker hits back at a rumor that it’s delaying the Pre’s release, promised for the first half of the year.First up: As ZDNet reports, Palm execs warned investors earlier this week that its third-quarter earnings will disappoint Wall Street—and boy, they weren’t kidding. The Street was looking for Palm to rake in about $155 million for the quarter, according to ZDNet; instead, Palm scraped by with just $85 million.

Why the shortfall? Blame a trio (no pun intended) of factors, according to Palm: The disastrous economy, delayed shipments of its Windows Mobile-powered Treo Pro (which will finally arrive on Sprint next week), and the fact that consumers are so eager for the Pre—which won rave reviews at CES in January—that they’ve lost interest in Palm’s “legacy” smartphones, such as the Centro and the Treo 755p.

That’s bad news for Palm, given that its balance sheet has seen nothing but red for the past six quarters (as the Motley Fool notes)—indeed, it seems pretty clear that Palm’s survival depends on the timely launch of the Pre, which is slated to come out in the first half of the year.

No wonder that Palm quickly denied a recent rumor that the Pre had been “officially” delayed. The rumor, attributed to an anonymous Palm “design employee,” surfaced Wednesday; several hours later, Palm insisted (via its Twitter feed) that the Pre is “still on track for the first half of 2009.”

In any case, we might to get more details next Thursday, during a scheduled Palm Webcast about the Pre. According to the invite (which arrived in my inbox yesterday), Palm and Sprint execs will “provide a demo of Palm Pre on the Sprint 3G network,” as well as “highlight three key differentiators … that make Pre standout in the smartphone device category.”

Pretty vague, but hopefully we’ll learn more about Palm’s release schedule for the Pre—such as, you know, a shipping date, the sooner the better.

Hmm…Music SD Cards Hmm…….

Posted by techwon81 on September 28, 2008

Slot Music Cards…

How I remember those days of vinyl records, 8-track tapes, cassettes, and CDs. Yes, I said CDs. Their days could be numbered as a new music format is about to burst onto the scene. Slot Music, a micro SD card that is about the size of a fingernail, has been developed by SanDisk. Each SD card will hold an album’s worth of music, album cover art, liner notes, and will have extra space for personal files and photos. All songs will be free of copy protection as well.

So far four music companies — Universal, Sony, Warner, and EMI –are on board as they hope to add another revenue stream to their bottom line. CD sales dropped 19 percent last year.

Best Buy and Wal-Mart are just two of the big retailers that will carry Slot Music. The new format is expected to be out before the holiday shopping season. Twenty-nine different albums ranging from Usher, Weezer, Akon, and even Elvis will be available at launch.
